Service Kits – Life insurance for shock absorbers

With shock absorbers subjected to extreme forces on a daily basis, resulting in high wear rates, ZF Trading UK believes service kits are essential – especially with winter just around the corner. Matt Shakespeare, Technical Sales Manager outlines why…

Shock absorbers take a lot of punishment and should undergo regular check ups – after all, a fully operational shock absorber and service kit should be considered an essential part of driving safety, particularly with winter fast approaching.

On the one hand, the kit serves as a supplementary spring, helping the spring and shock to dampen vibrations. On the other, it serves as a kind of life insurance policy for the shock absorber, providing a pressure stop to prevent overloading.

In an overload situation, such as when driving at high speeds over a pothole, the service kit’s pressure stop prevents the bottom valve from being destroyed by impact from the pressure rod which would stop the shock absorber from functioning.

Therefore, it is essential during every inspection that the service kit is checked for wear and replaced if not in technically perfect condition. Additionally, to guarantee safety, a new service kit should always be installed if a shock absorber needs replacing. The SACHS service kit serves the entire axle and consist of two pressure stops or compression buffers, two bellows and a protective tube or dust cap.

A worn pressure stop or supplementary spring will no longer be able to accommodate or guide the bellows or protective tube, leaving the piston rod exposed and vulnerable to dirt, water, stone impact and salt deposits. This in turn leads to premature wear on the piston rod seal and, ultimately, oil leaks, which will mean the shock absorber is no longer able to function and will require a costly replacement.
