ZF Trading UK Ltd has announced the launch of ZF Parts, a new brand that adds passenger car steering racks and pumps to its leading portfolio of automotive aftermarket components. The range will initially offer remanufacture of ZF original equipment (OE) units for prestige marques.
The remanufacturing process begins with complete disassembly of each unit, parts washing and inspection. Parts that comply with the original specification are reused, while those near or outside the wear limit are replaced with new ZF components. The unit is then rebuilt according to the latest ZF specifications, recalibrated and performance tested to the same criteria as for a new unit before release to the market.
On average, approximately 80 per cent of parts are reused in the remanufactured item, representing a considerable saving in the energy consumed and CO2 emitted during raw materials processing and manufacturing of the original item.
Remanufacturing should not be confused with reconditioning. A reconditioned unit may receive little more than steam cleaning and visual inspection before re-entering the retail market. At best, it may undergo pressure testing and replacement of seals and bearings, although these will almost certainly be non-OE parts, and possibly of inferior quality.
The remanufacture of automotive components offers distinct advantages for both the end user and the environment. Anyone with a green conscience will appreciate the fact that they can enjoy the reassurance of top quality – and the safety it confers – with the knowledge that replacement units for their vehicle have been made available via an ecologically sound process. The environment itself benefits from conservation of natural resources such as those used in the production of iron, steel and aluminium, plus the corresponding saving in energy used to convert these to finished parts.
